Proverb of the Day

Proverbs 2:1  My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

“If thou wilt”.  Each person, every moment of every day is given the gift of choice.

The “If thou wilt” begins at salvation.  The Apostle Paul said in Colossians 3:1, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above…”

Are you seeking those things which are above… receiving the Heavenly Father’s words as well as hiding his commandments  with thee?

Proverbs 1:1  The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

Solomon was a man God has used down through the years to give wise doctrine to those who have been willing to hear and heed.  Have you thanked the Lord for the men and women the Lord has used in your life to give you sound doctrine?

One of those who gave sound doctrine to Solomon was his dad, David. The Bible tells us that David was a man after God’s own heart that he would fulfill all God’s will.

What a testimony for an individual to have.  Can it be said of you that you are a person after God’s own heart and that you will fulfill all God’s will?  It starts with fulfilling all God’s will today.   Acts 13:22

Proverbs 29:1  He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

How do you respond when someone reproves you?  One can humbly accept the reproof and change their attitude or actions or one can “harden the neck.”

Why are there so many broken (destroyed) lives today?   Because of responding disobediently to God’s reproof.

Is the Lord reproving you in some area of your life today?  Is he using a person that is “bold as a lion” (Proverb 28:1) in your life to “reprove” you?   If so, don’t harden the neck.  Live a blessed life not a broken life.

Proverbs 28:1  The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Christians are to be open and honest with one another.

Proverbs 27:5 tells us that “Open rebuke is better than secret love.”

Sad to say there are those who fail to confront their conflicts with others and “flee when no man pursueth.”  This is nothing less than wickedness.

God has given us this exhortation to keep stress out of our lives and thus live the “blessed” life.

Is there someone in your life today with whom you need to be “bold as a lion”.  Are you in the process of fleeing when no man is pursuing you?

Be bold for Christ’s sake as was the Apostle Paul.  Read Philemon

Proverbs 27:1  Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Luke 12:16-21

Proverbs 26:1 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

Snow in summer and rain in harvest are out of place and become a curse and that which is detestable.   An excellent illustration of this is the story of Haman in Esther chapters 3-9.  Why not read it today and be reminded once again how unseemly honour was for the fool Haman?

Proverbs 25:1 These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

Proverbs are short, pithy sayings in general use, stating a general truth or piece of advice.  1 Kings 4:32 tells us that King Solomon spake three thousand proverbs.  The men of King Hezekiah thought very important to write down these sayings therefore we would be wise to take these proverbs to heart.

Proverbs 24:1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

Our wicked nature craves that which is evil.  Envy knocks at our heart’s door many times causing us to compare the evil way with the right way. Without godly counsel in the heart (Psalm 119:11), the natural desire then is to be with them and the end result is to be like them.  Read Psalm 1

Proverbs 23:1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

To “consider diligently what is before thee” is a wise admonition in any area of our life. Today you will be faced with many things (that which is put before you).  The phrase consider diligently is a very strong admonition which means to think twice, to consider consideringly.  As you approach each moment of your day, may you consider diligently what is before thee thus avoiding unnecessary consequences. Read 1 Corinthians 10:31

Proverbs  22:1  A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

Life is all about choices and the choices that are made each day labels us….gives us a name.

Ecclesiastes 7:1 tells us that a good name is better than precious ointment.

The most precious of names is the name of Jesus.

The songwriter said, “There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing it’s worth.  It sounds like music in my ear, the sweetest name on earth.

Oh, how I love Jesus ….. because He first loved me.”

Glory to His name!   Let’s think upon His name throughout this day and by making that one choice, our names will grow sweeter.

Proverbs 21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

Can you say with the writer today that YOUR heart is in the hand of the LORD…he turneth it whithersoever he will?

I want my desire to be so pliable concerning the LORD that there will be no resistance whatsoever to His perfect will in my life.  Is that your desire as well.  Why not tell Him so at this moment; Lord, my heart is in your hand, turn it whithersoever you will today.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Proverbs 20:1 is a warning to those who would be tempted to use alcoholic beverages or to give such a thing to others. One major reason that one should not use alcoholic beverages is that it could pose a stumbling block to one’s family and to one’s neighbors as well as to one’s self.  I wonder how many people have fallen victim to alcoholism because of taking that first drink offered to them by a careless, unwise neighbor…or church leader?   Wouldn’t it be more pleasing to our Heavenly Father to be filled with the Spirit instead of using the spirits?  Ephesians 5:18

Proverbs 19:1  Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

God’s valuable man is one who walks in his integrity.  Notice “in HIS integrity”.  This poor man possesses, above all, integrity.  All that is said here of the implied rich man is that he is perverse in his lips and is a fool.  His riches count for nothing not even for a mention in this everlasting book. Can it be said of you today that you walk in your integrity or are you consumed with that which causes you to be perverse in your lips and are a fool (only fooling yourself)?

Proverbs 18:1

Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.

Be careful of “Boldly going where no man has gone before.” This mishandling of desire is described in Genesis 3:6.  Eve separated herself from God’s wisdom and voluntarily sought that which was forbidden to intermeddle with, that which was “off limits.”                                                                                                                                                                        Read Deuteronomy 29:29

Proverbs 17:1

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

What good is any sacrifice (that which is considered valuable) without quietness (peace).

The sacrifice then becomes a curse instead of a blessing.  How many families are cursed this very day because, even though there are “sacrifices”, there is no quietness.

Proverbs 15:16 Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.

Proverbs 16:1

The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.

The tongue reveals what the heart conceals.

Lu 6:45  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
